Question of the day

Ask has launched "question of the day" when you go on the Ask homepage from the logo a bubble has a question of the day, you can click the link to get an answer for the question. We believe that this is a comback for Bings changed background. They also added a nav bar that tells what people are helping, how to help Haiti, and advertising there change your skin option.

Happy Birthday Orkut!

As many of you know Orkut, Googles microblog turns 6 today! Thats right today is Orkuts Birthday so we would just like to wish Orkut a happy birthday and a great year! The biggest question is, what will they come out with this year?

Did you re-do your hair or is it the nav bar?

Bebo the social network owned by AOL has re-done there nav bar. Its a little more fancy and it is darker black but the thing I noticed the most was the logo is different. This nav bar change is most likely an attempt to compete with something such as changing design of a profile, although not as nice, it is still and nice little touch.

Hoogle is bought

Hoogle.com the closest domain name to Google.com has been bought by a new site only known as hypocrite.com. It apears to be some kind of fan site with servral videos and blog post. It was originally owned by a small social network known as Beaver Network. This will most likely raise the Fan site by allot of views and decrees the Beaver Networks visiting.

Creating a social netowork just got even more fancy!

Ning has re created there homepage it makes it allot faster to create a network and check out some other popular Ning networks the only thing that isn't fancy is the button that says "create!"

Shoutitout login updated BEFORE v.2.0

Shoutitout is coming out with a V.2.0 as we all know, BUT before they do this they added a new feature to there login, you can login with your email OR nick! For example ours would be Nick: uhhmmnews Password: Hyväyritysmuttaeikerrosinulle this will make it so much easier to log onto Shoutitout they might just get a little bit more popular!

3 Reasons why Friendfeed isn't fun anymore

1. It isn't very busy.
Friendfeed isn't fun because no one is on it. When you go an ask everyone you know if they have a Friendfeed you might get 3 yeses and the rest would be noes.

2. Friendfeed isn't "in" right now
Friendfeed just isn't in right now. Its owned by Facebook but people use Facebook not Friendfeed and its just not really "in."

3. There NOTHING NEW!
Friendfeed never comes out with anything new. There last big feature was the buy by Facebook and thats all they have mentioned recently, if Friendfeed wants to stay popular they have to come out with some new features.

(Rumor) Its about to be a 4 way war!

As you all know over the last few weeks aside from maybe link shortening Check-in has been the most competitive topic. First Foursquare came out, Then Gowalla, afterwards Yelp came out with it on there iPhone app. Well, now Shoutitout has decided that they want in on the wars (as usual) Therefore, if our source is right, Shoutitout will reales Check-ins with their up coming V.2.0! So I guess the question is How will this effect Yelp, Foursquare, and Gowalla? Well, our guess is Foursquare will not be happy about it and it will take a few users from them as for Yelp we doubt they will care much since they just released there iPhone app to compete with Foursquare they will probably welcome the extra attack on Foursquare, as for the start up Gowalla we think they will have to come back with something our it may put them out of business.

Only if you like the newspaper THAT much

Whats wrong with China you ask? They don't like porn

Chinese mobile providers will monitor text messages in the country for “illegal or unhealthy content” and suspend service when a customer inadvertently sends up a red flag, according to a report in The New York Times.

Companies like China Mobile will turn the potentially offending messages over to the authorities to be reviewed. If the customer is cleared of any wrongdoing, his or her service will be restored, but it doesn’t look like the mobile providers or authorities are going out of their way to clearly define what constitutes an offense.

Police will provide words to scan for to catch potential criminals in the name of fighting pornography. We reported a couple of weeks ago that more than 5,000 arrests were made on pornography charges in 2009 to prevent the scourge from “overwhelming the country’s Internet and threatening the emotional health of children.”

We’re not sure which words are on the list, but the Times quotes Beijing University telecommunications professor Kan Kaili who claims that “they are doing wide-ranging checks, checking anything and everything, even if it is between a husband and wife.”

Married couples? That could be a problem for the pornography flags, people. This seems to be par for the course if we’re getting the full story here in the West, though — Google has threatened to leave the country if China doesn’t make an effort to improve freedom of speech.

Firefox seems to have caught Shoutitouts login on fire

Shoutitout has been having login issues as they stated in a blog post and several Shouts. We are not sure why they are having theses issues but it seems when people try to login if they are using Firefox they are redirected to thier profile page but are not logged in. Users have been complaining about this for a few days now and have only gotten limited information from Shoutitout. We have tried Shoutitout login on Firefox and had the same issue, so if emily or any Shoutitout staff is reading this post please tell us whats going.

A song about everything that matters

We will skip her details since you all know who she is, anyway iJustine and popular blogger, youtuber, twitter-er and many other things has realesed a remix of the song Tik tok by Kesha in a tech form so here it is!

First China now Germany

When the Federal Office for Security in Information Technology issued a public
warning to not use Internet Explorer earlier this week, I was proud of my country.
That did not last long.
Yesterday,
Google Germany confirmed that the German newspaper publishers association (BDZV), Microsoft owned Ciao and online maps service Euro-Cities AG called the German cartel authorities to investigate Google’s business practices, for various different reasons.
At the heart of their complaint they sing along the well-known Rupert Murdoch idea: “We have no clue how to innovate our own business model, so we’d love to get a share of
Google’s ads revenues!”
The rationale behind it is the assertion, by grabbing parts of their “valuable content”, created at “extremely high production costs” and inserting it into search results,
Google would violate the publishers’ intellectual property rights.
Someone has yet to explain to me, how
Google could potentially do this with only some two to three lines of text displayed underneath each link in their result listings.
Euro-Cities AG, a company offering an online maps service and one that I’ve never ever heard of before, additionally feels unhappy with
Google delivering its own Maps services for free.
With ad revenues rapidly decreasing in traditional print over here, simply trying to reach out for
Google’s pockets seems outrageous to me.
Would intellectual property rights be the real driver, simple technical means to prevent
Google’s crawlers from indexing a site exist since more than a decade. But then again, publishers obviously do like that part of Google’s business. Being found by millions of daily Google users is okay, while Google making money by providing the best search service in the world is not?
A clear case of double standards.
To make matters worse our ministry of justice, a lady named Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, on Thursday stated, she is not too happy about the “megalomania” and is ready to act. “If this does not occur, then perhaps we will be required to step in as lawmakers,” she said.
Google Germany spokesman Kay Oberbeck remains relaxed:
“We would be happy to explain our products and business practices to the German authorities and are confident, that they fully comply with German and European law.”
Hopefully, our anti-trust officials will act commonsensical and deny to take action. Maybe we can also find somebody, who takes a few hours to explain Mrs. Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, the basics of how the Internet works.
As an immediate action to boost their own credibility, I’d like to recommend to the German newspaper publishers association, to remove the embedded
Google Map from their driving directions page and maybe pay for one from Euro-Cities AG.

Googles search for iPhone and Android are down.

Update: We’re getting reports that some people can access Google Mobile Search, and others cannot. We think it may be regional, but we’re not sure. We will update you when we learn more.

This is a strange anomaly that we’ve just come across. It looks as if Google Mobile search has taken a tumble. Our attempts to search for anything on three different phones (two iPhones and a Nexus One) have come up empty. Tweets are rolling in about the problem too. However, it looks like other phones, including the BlackBerry, can still access Google Search. Google web search is also still up.

Google is having some type of issue, but whether it’s a server issue, a bug, or something else, we don’t know. We’ve contacted Google and will get back to you when we learn more about the outage.

Ding and Bing = Cha Ching

Bing the Microsoft search engine started off in a bolt dominating everything and being said that it could downthrow Google. It has over 28,000,000 separate visitors after 3 months of being on the web. Well, it looks like another search engine that rhymes with Bing, Ding has done the same. Ding, is a social media search. It searches site like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc... it is also believed they will also be search sites like Digg and Lala. The site got somewhere between 100,000 and 120,00 visits today alone almost as much as sites like Bing do. It has gotten an estimate of $10,000 in today alone as well, and had caught the eye of many large companies.

Google countdown reaches zero

Googles homepage countdown went down to zero at midnight this morning and it was caught on video! So here is the video! Seems like a real step up from the last few years of Google new years.

Posting links just got a little harder

Facebook as you know has always done the same as Myspace, Bebo, Friendster, Tagged, hi5, and Ning. They put those confusing letters to make sure your not a bot when you post a link, Frankly, I think its annoying. But anyway well Facebook has upgraded theirs making it actually easier they put to dots on part of the word and the word goes into them changing colors. Screen Shot below. The question is, is this Facebooks and Facebooks alone or will other networks like the ones we listed earlier start doing this to.
Can you tell us what it says in the comments below?
