Myspace is determined to survive even if they have to use Facebook to do it

MySpace is launching Facebook sync today, allowing MySpace users to sync their status updates with their Facebook profile or Page. The social network launched a similar functionality for Twitter last year.

Once you’ve synced your Facebook account, you can update status on MySpace and it will automatically be shared with friends on Facebook. MySpace is touting this feature as a big win for the growing number of musicians who populate the social network to be able to easily share music and content with fans on both sites.

Of course, it’s not really a two-way sync because you cannot push an update from Facebook to MySpace with the feature (note the one way arrow in MySpace’s image below). Once the feature is fully implemented (meaning, it becomes a two-way sync), status updates should flood the other way, considering Facebook’s massive user base. We saw Yahoo make a similar move, launching a deep integration with Facebook Connect. And AOL also launched a two-way sync with Twitter and Facebook for AIM.

It should be interesting to see what MySpace has in store for us with its new version set to launch this Fall.

Myspace: A place to get fired

Less than a month ago I asked the MySpace Co-Presidents, Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn (pictured left), if it was possible to effectively run a company with two equal leaders. Their answer – they’ve made it work. I asked if they were both there for the long term. Jones said “Assuming News Corp. will have us we’re going to stay heavily engaged.” I’ve added the video clip below.

Well, you know what they say about assumptions. Tomorrow MySpace will announce the departure of Jason Hirschhorn, we’ve heard from multiple sources inside and outside of MySpace. And we’ve also heard that Jones will be named CEO sometime soon, although likely not tomorrow.

The two were promoted to co-presidents in February when previous CEO Owen Van Natta was fired. Van Natta held the CEO spot for less than a year – he was hired to replace founding CEO Chris DeWolfe in April 2009.

Yes, it’s been musical chairs at MySpace. Or, a less charitable description: rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

The company hasn’t just lost the cultural significance of being the top social network – a title they lost to Facebook long ago. They are also losing page views and users at a rapid clip. MySpace Music is hemorrhaging money to the labels. And their lucrative search deal with Google is ending in two weeks, and the company has yet to announce how they’ll replace that revenue.

For all those reasons and more, I’ve argued passionately that MySpace needs to be spun off into a private company. They can’t please News Corp. and find a way to win with users at the same time. Publicly Jones says he disagrees. Who knows what he thinks privately.

Update: Statement by Jon Miller, Digital Chief for News Corp.:

Statement from Jon Miller, Chief Digital Officer, News Corporation Confirming the Departure of Jason Hirschhorn, Co-President of MySpace

Los Angeles, CA , June 17, 2010 — We fully respect Jason’s decision to leave and his personal desire to return to New York. As many people know, Jason is like family to me, and as expected, he’s done everything we asked of him and more. We’re incredibly grateful for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to the company. And as I know Jason agrees, Mike Jones has done an outstanding job leading MySpace into its next evolution and is the right person to take the reins. There are no plans to bring in additional management.

Twitpic hits 10 million, launches face tagging

Twitpic has just hit 10 million users, it also just launched a new feature, face tagging, face tagging is already used on Myspace, Facebook, Flickr... etc... you can post a picture with someone ells and then tag there Twitter account when they are in it or you can simply tag yourself so people know who you are as shown below.
it is something I have been wanting on Twitpic for a long time and its final here. As well today Twitpic hit the 10 millionth user which just shows how big Twitter is as well because you can't use Twitpic without a Twitter account (though that would be a good feature to add for them as well). Twitpic is the biggest Twitter sharing site though Tweetphoto and yfrog that recently passed Tweetphoto are growing faster than Twitpic at the moment it will still be a while before they compete with Twitpic.

Bit.ly dishing out 4.7 billion clicks a month

There are over 150 million clicks on Bit.ly links each day. The amount of data running through the service is massive, and continuing to grow at an incredible pace. But we’ve known that for a while. Just as impressive may be what Bit.ly is doing with its premium service, Bit.ly Pro.

Today, the service is announcing some of the huge names across the web have signed up to use Bit.ly Pro. Yahoo, MySpace, The Huffington Post, Politico, Pepsi, NPR, Scribd, Toys”R”Us, CSPAN, Dailymotion, IMDB, the New York Times, Bravo, Mozilla and Amazon have all joined in recent months. We started using the service shortly after it launched in December — those tcrn.ch you see all run through Bit.ly Pro.

There are now over 12,500 publishers and brands using the Pro version of the service, Bit.ly says — that’s more than double the number they released just two months ago. All told, there are over 1.7 billion monthly uniques for these Bit.ly Pro users.

Overall, Bit.ly hit 4.7 billion decodes (their term for clicks) in May. That’s nearly double what it was just this past February. The service is now the 76th most visited site on the web, according to DoubleClick.

Bit.ly is also announcing a new partnership today with Webtrends. Later this Summer, Webtrends will start incorporating Bit.ly data into its analytics packages.

Weekly site review (Bebo)

Bebo is a social networking site owned by AOL it has plans to either be closed down or sold from AOL to another buyer.

Pros:
1. Bebo has good IM despite it not being used very often it isn't as in the way as Facebook and Myspaces IM and is allot faster.
2. It allows you to add a lifestream to your profile making it easier for you to put all your sites in one place similar to Friendfeed.
3. It has a beautiful design and layout with a very "shine" control bar.

Noes:
1. It isn't very active most members only check there account every month or so.
2. It has had a major drop in visitors unlike sites like Facebook, Mysapce, and Tagged its close competitors.
3. It is for sale in a way AOL has said that it is either closing it down or selling it so if it isn't sold you will not have Bebo anymore.

Gowalla adds events

Gowalla the second in command in the battle to be the top location based site has launched a new en genius feature. Events, reports say that it allows you to post an even for people to check in at when they show up for it and they can also confirm that they are coming like a RSVP similar to Facebook, Myspace, and SocailGo. I'd say this feature could rise them above Foursquare or at lest make sure Brightkite and Loopt don't come up from behind.

Everybody adds Facebook connect

Earlier today Myspace announced that it is adding Facebook connect to some of there features which is there first acknowledgement that Facebook owns the social networking market. Now we weren't going to talk about this in till we learned that the Apple store is also adding Facebook connect. So Facebook just scored too big points in there attempt to take over the internet after recently passing Facebook in the US and UK.

Ding and Bing = Cha Ching

Bing the Microsoft search engine started off in a bolt dominating everything and being said that it could downthrow Google. It has over 28,000,000 separate visitors after 3 months of being on the web. Well, it looks like another search engine that rhymes with Bing, Ding has done the same. Ding, is a social media search. It searches site like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc... it is also believed they will also be search sites like Digg and Lala. The site got somewhere between 100,000 and 120,00 visits today alone almost as much as sites like Bing do. It has gotten an estimate of $10,000 in today alone as well, and had caught the eye of many large companies.

Posting links just got a little harder

Facebook as you know has always done the same as Myspace, Bebo, Friendster, Tagged, hi5, and Ning. They put those confusing letters to make sure your not a bot when you post a link, Frankly, I think its annoying. But anyway well Facebook has upgraded theirs making it actually easier they put to dots on part of the word and the word goes into them changing colors. Screen Shot below. The question is, is this Facebooks and Facebooks alone or will other networks like the ones we listed earlier start doing this to.
Can you tell us what it says in the comments below?

Shoutitout: We're music is going to soon be playing

Shoutitout an Lala have struck a deal so that Shoutitout will post a music player instead of a link to any music file URL that has the domain lala.com in it. This might be the edge Lala has been looking for over sites like last.fm and iLike who struck a deal with Myspace. Never the less Lala isn't the only music site getting in on this deal Playlist is in and it is rumored that their have been emails sent between Shoutitout and a music URL shortener called Tinysong witch would mean you could post any song on Shoutitout.

LinkedIn launches API

As rumors continue to swirl around LinkedIn’s possible IPO, the professional social network is steadily adding useful features that help transcend the platform’s technology into other applications.

LinkedIn recently launched two-way integration with Twitter and also rolled out a plug-in to pull in your LinkedIn contacts within Microsoft Outlook. And today, LinkedIn is opening upits API to start letting developers make applications that tap into LinkedIn’s social network.

While LinkedIn is releasing 11 different APIs, they fall into three distinct categories. First, developers will be able to let users easily access their information, profiles, connections and messages via oAuth login. The second functionality is to give users the ability to make actionable decisions about information, but letting them message their LinkedIn contacts, post updates, accept contacts and more. And the third piece of the puzzle is search. So developers will now be able to embed LinkedIn search in other applications. The social network’s search engine was re-launched last year and has done over one billion queries in this year alone.

Over the past year, LinkedIn has made select business development partnerships with technology companies for integrations, such as IBM, Microsoft, Research In Motion, and Twitter. While these partnerships created additional channels for LinkedIn’s platform, the opening up of the social network’s API is no doubt going to expand its presence across the web, perhaps representing a new level of growth for the social network.

LinkedIn has already tested the API with several developers and applications are already going to be launching in the near future. Twitter, MySpace and Facebook client TweetDeck will be integrated with LinkedIn in its next version. From the client, you’ll be able to see a stream of updates from your contacts, view profiles of contacts and comment and message contacts directly from TweetDeck. Posterous, Box.net, and Ribbit will all launch LinkedIn integrations in the near future as well.

LinkedIn’s VP of search and platform products, Adam Nash, told me that over the past year, the network has received 4,000 requests from developers to integrate LinkedIn with their applications. Nash says that this is the first step for LinkedIn to become an open ecosystem and there are future plans for additional APIs to be released down the line.

50 million users strong, LinkedIn could expand its already powerful growth with development of third-party applications. It’s a no-brainer for LinkedIn to open up its API. As Twitter’s platform has shown, an open ecosystem produces innovative and sometimes, extremely popular, products around a product. And it doesn’t hurt to have a loyal developer community as well.

Myspace to buy iMeem

Myspace the large social network has bough iMeem a music social network and most of its assets for a rumored somewhere around 1 million dollars. About half of iMeems employes will be working for Myspace the other half will be "let go." The one question is will their service live on or will it fade into nothingness like it was thought Myspace was turning into and FreindFeed is showing the first signs of doing. Well, according to sources thats up to the record labels. As far as we know none of the deals with the record labels are being terminated and Myspace intends to push iMeem on so it will still stay live and busy.

Google Music search

Last week rumors got out that Google Lastfm Myspace and other sites were teaming up to make a search engine to enrich the Google experience but it does more than just find music it offers audio streaming one click buying and many more things. Here is something that will happen once this comes out to the open web.
1. Itunes store popularity will decrees
With Google allowing you to buy music from almost any music site the apple itunes store will seem like its small.

2. Myspace is back
This will most likely incress myspace users and gives myspace a BIG help that is needed they have been falling this might be their break threw to get back to the top.

3. Google will crush Yahoo even more
Besides the fact that Yahoo came out with a music search a few days ago it will smash Yahoo into the ground even more as if Yahoo can't make something then days later Google comes out with the same thing.

4. Drop in users by sties like Playlist?
So heres the question with this new amazing search engine will sites who didn't get in on this deal like Playlist lose there newly found popularity from this search engine and other sites like lastfm take over. Or will they still continue to grow?
